Реферат: 1403. Birchwood, C. W. Jan. 17. Ball-jointed hinges.-Relates to a method of making ball-and-socket joints for rods, linkwork &c. in which the stem of the ball member has a limited movement in a guide slot formed in the socket. A steel or other metal blank is turned down as shown in Fig. 3, and a socket 13 drilled. Slots 14, Fig. 4, are cut in the socket wall, preferably with a milling- cutter. The ends 16 of the slots may be bevelled. The ball member 20 with stem 19 is turned from a suitable blank and is placed within the socket, the walls of which are then compressed to the form shown in Fig. 6, to retain the ball in place. The assembled joint may then be tempered. Fig. 9 shows the ball joint applied to a link-work in which the members 28, 32, 40 move about axes which are respectively oblique, vertical, and horizontal, ball joints being provided at 31, 35, 37, 41, and 45.
