[Class 28 (ii)] The knife guard or cover plate 14 of a discknife slicing-machine can be displaced (hinged away) from the knife 4 to allow access for cleaning of both the knife and cover plate, the cover plate then being bodily removable without tools, and when the cover plate is in operative position to mask the knife edge, it is locked against removal. The circular cover plate 14 has its flanged masking edge cut away along the angle B to expose the knife edge for cutting or, when for sharpening, the cover plate is rotated round by moving the knobs 28, 29, thereby exposing a different part of the edge to sharpening wheels. The cover plate is removably attached to plate 20 hinged at 22 to the base of the machine so that the whole can be rocked forward clear of the knife after which the cover plate can be lifted out over lugs 26, 27. The hinge pin is bent at one end so that it may be withdrawn to allow removal. of the hinged plate 20. When in operation, the cover plate is clamped to a rear housing 15 by by a pin 25 on a knob 28. The knob 28 is moved into one or other of slots 18 or 19 on a locking bar 16 on the housing 15. The slot 18 is for cutting position and the slot 19 for the knife sharpening position. The knob 28 is moved intermediate of these two slots to allow the: whole plate to be hinged forward and then removed as above. The machine also includes; a slice deflector (13, Fig. 1 not shown) on the bracket (3 not shown) at the back of the knife. The device is applicable to a gravity feed or a vertical knife machine.
