Since the fuel is injected mainly when the inlet valve 21 is closed, it has time to vaporize in the relatively warm region 17 so that a relatively nomogeneous mixture is subsequently introduced into the cylinder. To assist in maintaining the temperature of the region 17, the region is not provided with cooling water passages and may even be insulated or heat-jacketed. The air/fuel ratio may be higher than 15. A throttle valve 32 is provided in each induction pipe 12b.
