Valve gear.-The valves of a compound or multiple - expansion duplex steam engine are operated by rock-shafts K, L, Fig. 2, connected by levers 17, links 18, and rods M, with the lowpressure pistons N. These shafts K, L are preferably placed between the high and intermediate pressure cylinders A, A<1>, B, B<1> of a triple-expansion engine, or above the high-pressure cylinder of a compound engine having two pairs of cylinders, Each piston N operates the cut-off valves of its own engine by cranks 12, links 13, levers 14, links 15, and a crank 2, and the admission valves of the other engine by the cranks 10, links 11, and a crank 1. The admission and exhaust valves may be separate, and cut-off valves may be fitted also to the intermediate pressure cylinders.
