Steam &c. hammers.-In an improvement on the valve described in Specification No. 10,101, A.D. 1896, [Abridgment Class Steam engines], the valve is so constructed that the valve cylinder is of uniform bore. Considering the left - hand end of the valve, when the main piston opens a passage 99 and closes a passage 19 fluid pressure passes from the cylinder 7 to the end of the valve by passages 99, an annular space 21, and passages 9. From the valve fluid passes by passage 19 and an annular space 13 into the inner end of an auxiliary cylinder 12 when the valve moves to the right by expansion. The auxiliary cylinder 12 is then opened to the main pressure supply from an annular space 14 through the annular space 13 and the valve is thus locked. For the return stroke the main piston 11 opens a passage 19 to the annular space 10, which is always open to main exhaust 51 by passages 50. The end of the valve chamber thus exhausts, and, pressure being admitted to the other end of the valve, the valve moves over, the fluid in the inner end of cylinder 12 acting as a buffer during the latter part of the stroke. In a modified form the action is similar but the stationary piston 16 is made separate from the valve cylinder cover and has an enlargement in a recessed portion of the cylinder with rubber bufters to absorb shocks.
