As shown in Fig. 1, the combined wheel and rail shoes 3 are connected by toggle-links 4 to a collar 5 on a vertical rod 6, which may slide in a bracket 7 on the car frame and may carry a rail shoe 7. The rod 6 is connected by arms 9 to transverse shafts 8, which may be operated from opposite ends of the vehicle through chains 11 and arms 10. The shoes 3 are guided by rods 13 pivoted to the vehicle and sliding in guides 13 on the shoes. The releasing-springs 12 may be so adjusted that in ordinary applications the shoes 3 are applied to the wheels only, and in emergencies are forced into the angle between the wheel and the rail by a further movement of the operating-handle. In a modification, Fig. 4, the rod 6 is screw-threaded, and the collar 5 is moved vertically thereon by rotating the rod through bevel-gear and a cross-shaft 15. The links 4 may be adjusted by means of screws and slots 4, 4, so that, by shortening its link, any shoe may be kept out of action. The wearing- portion 3 can be adjusted to the wheel rim by studs 3 and distance-pieces between the wearing- portion and the shoe. The rod 6 may be encircled by a releasing- spring. The noses of the shoes engaging the track are rounded off.
