Horizontal engines, general arrangement of; independent engines driving same shaft; cylinders; pistons.-Relates to steam, compressed-air, and like engines in which a stepped piston reciprocates in a correspondingly-stepped cylinder. Fig. 4 shows an engine having a piston p, of three diameters, which drives a transverse crank shaft by means of a connecting-rod, jointed near one end of the piston. The engine may be used as a compound or multiple-expansion one. In one modification, the piston has hollow tail rods, working through open-ended extensions of the cylinder. By this means, air or water is circulated for cooling- purposes. The connecting-rod may be jointed to one of these tail-rods, instead of to the piston as shown. In another modification shown in Fig. 6, the connecting-rod is jointed to a rod t fixed transversely in the piston. In this way, several engines may be arranged to drive one shaft.
