Annular-chamber type.-The shaft 10 carries a wheel 11 having a number of pistons adapted to rotate in the annular chamber 13, which is supplied at the proper times with steam from the chamber 34, by means of conical valves 29 operated by the cam-wheel 30 on the shaft 10. A number of valves 18 are normally placed across the chamber 13, and these move aside to allow the pistons to pass. This is effected by means of the cam-wheel 19, cam 20, internal wheel 26, pinions 27, and shafts 28 to which the valves 18 are attached. When the surface 22 engages the surface 23, a valve 18 is moved in one direction, and is reversed when the surface 24 engages the surface 25. Fig. 4 shows two pistons 35, 36 and their positions relatively to the steam and exhaust ports 14, 15 respectively. In a modification, a ring slide valve is substituted for the conical valves 29 shown in Fig. 1.
