[Also in Division H1] The control stem 84 of a mechanical device, such as a gate valve, may be moved longitudinally by rotary drive means 68, 69 or by a source of stored energy, such as the spring 104, which is released in response to predetermined conditions to move the device to a preselected safe position. The stem is in screw-threaded engagement with a rotatable tubular shaft 82, having a flange 86 mounted in thrust bearings 88, 90 and splines 78 for driving engagement with a sleeve 66 coupled to the worm drive 68, 69. A toothed gear drive (144, 148, Fig. 4, not shown) connects the worm to an electric motor having switches in its supply which are opened at the normal limits of travel or in response to excessive torque by axial movement of the worm against a spring load. The spring 104 is released when a solenoid 110 is de-energized automatically or manually to permit a spring 116 to withdraw a latching member 112 from a recess 114 in a spring retainer 92. If the valve is already closed when the spring is released, the gate will be in stopping abutment with the bonnet (26, Fig. 1, not shown) while if the gate is partially open, the spring will expand just sufficiently to move the gate to the closed position. Resetting of the spring is accomplished by rotating the shaft 82 so that it travels downwardly on the valve stem until the latching member 112 enters the recess 114. Switches 120, 122 are engaged by the spring retainer to provide an indication of its position. Hand wheels (142) may be connected to the rotary drive means.
