Energy and quantity meters.-A meter having a counter 104 connected by differential gearing t with two clock escapements n and pendulums a, b, one of which b is controlled electromagnetically, is provided with balance gear E for synchronizing the two pendulums during periods when no current is passing. In a meter having a pendulum controlling-coil i carrying a shunt current, the constant-rate gearing 23 may move a switch 32, to connect the coil i, or to set free the balance E, alternately, during periods of two minutes. The balance may be a permanent magnet E, carried by a shaft 2, and having its poles situated over soft iron armatures D on extensions of the pendulums ; or arms of the shaft 2 may carry light helical springs, with which curved extensions of the pendulums may come in contact. In either form, tilting of the balance alters the rate of both pendulums. The tilting is effected by a frictionwheel 41 on the shaft 2 bearing on another wheel on the differentially-driven shaft v when no current is passing through the pendulum controlling- coil i, any rotation of the differential shaft v then turning the balance E in the proper direction. When current is passed through the pendulum controlling-coil i, a counterweighted lever 3 is freed, and, lifting a wheel on the balance shaft 2, holds it stationary. The switch 32 is an insulating- cylinder with a weighted arm 34 to hold it in either of two positions, to which it is moved by pins being engaged by pins on a disc 25, rotated by the gearing 23 ; two plates on the cylinder connect a shunt terminal through a central spring with either of two side springs, one of which supplies the pendulum controlling-coil i, and the other a magnet 6 for withdrawing the lever 3 to free the balance gear. A main current coil may be carried by the pendulum, and supplied with current through corrugated copper tapes, attached near the suspension. The two escapements n may be driven by a selfwinding clock, or an electric or weight motor controlled by a magnetic brake, or by two shafts 10, 11 of an alternating-current induction motor, shown in Fig. 3. The shafts carry copper discs 8, 9, overlapping, between two pairs of straight pole-pieces ; the front pieces are shown at 12, 13. The two lower pole-pieces are parts of an electromagnet 14 carrying a coil 16 in the shunt circuit of the meter, and also a secondary coil. The two upper pole-pieces are parts of a magnet 15 having a winding supplied from the secondary coil on the magnet 14.
