In a copying machine tool, e.g. a copy milling machine, having a pivotally mounted tracer adapted to follow the contour of a pattern and to control the feed movements of the tool through control means which are responsive to the deflections of the tracer on a lead or delayed action principle, the pivotal mounting of the tracer is such as to allow adjustment of the position of the pivot point axially therealong to adjust the deflection ratio. A tracer 2 carrying a replaceable pin 4 is pivotally mounted at a pivot point S in a tracer housing 1, the pivotal mounting of the tracer 2 being vertically adjustable in a guide slot 12 to which it may be clamped in selected position by means of a clamping nut 15. A pointer 16 indicates on a fixed scale 17 the effective length of the upper part of the tracer while a slidably mounted scale 18 with a stop member 21 pivotable into a measuring position in which it locates the end of the tracer pin 4 can be used to determine the length of the lower part of the tracer. Where the upper or lower parts of the tracer are to be of equal length, i.e. a deflection ratio of 1: 1, the scale readings at pointer 16 on both scales will be equal and if the pin 4 is replaced by a pin of different length the pivot point 5 can be adjusted till this condition is again realised. The pivotal mounting may be of the ball joint type comprising a part-spherical member having a central bore and a ball bearing enclosed therein in which the tracer is axially movably mounted (Figs. 3, 5, not shown) or may be of the cardan joint type, the inner ring of which forms a sleeve in which the tracer is axially slidable. The adjustably pivotally mounted lever may be used with control elements, e.g. hydraulic valves, or electrical elements operating on the lead or delay control principles, and in the latter case in order to secure the tracer axially a cardan joint is provided in which the inner member is formed by the tracer itself and the outer member rests through a ball bearing on the base of the housing (Figs. 5, 6, not shown). A second fixed scale (36), (Fig. 4, not shown), may be mounted on the housing and a movable vernier scale (37) associated therewith to provide for a direct reading of the deflection ratio. It is stated that with a delay control copying arrangement variation of the deflection ratio can be used to alter the scale of reproduction from the master pattern, while with a lead control arrangement the cutting speed can be varied.
