An image generation device with which visible recognizability of a recognized solid object and a substitute image which is composited in a region of a solid object image which is a photographed image of the solid object is increased comprises an image compositing unit which: recognizes a solid object present in a peripheral region of a vehicle and outputs solid object characteristic information which denotes a characteristic of the solid object; determines a solid object image region which is an image region of the solid object in a photographed image based on location information which is included in the solid object characteristic information; outputs at least one of a substitute image of the solid object which is colored with a color based on color information which is included in the solid object characteristic information or a substitute image of a specified solid object in a specified orientation of the solid object which is specified based on classification information and attitude information; and generates a bird's-eye image with the substitute image appended wherein the substitute image which is outputted from a substitute image output unit in the location of the solid object image region is composited.
