Thus, S/N ratio of the reproduction signal is improved, thus, making it possible to improve, e.g., the error rate in the digital system to much degree. One of the three bundles of rays is used as a servo-signal light, and the remaining two bundles of rays are used as data signal lights. A defocusing diffraction element splits at least the servo-signal light into a least two bundles of rays in a direction corresponding to the tangential direction of the recording tracks, substantially perpendicular to the split direction of the beam splitter and which provides at least two split lights with a predetermined amount of positive or negative defocus in an optical axis direction. A pair of servo-signal light receiving elements receive the split beams of the servo-signal light produced by the defocusing diffraction element. A data light receiving element receives the data signal lights. The defocusing diffraction element is made of a non-circular element whose numerical aperture in the tangential direction of the recording tracks is smaller than the numerical aperture in the radial direction.

Recording medium on which information is magneto-optically recorded is irradiated with a linearly polarized light beam. A light beam reflected from or passed through the recording medium is changed in phase by a wave plate. Through an analyzer the differently polarized components of the light beam from the wave plate are combined by aligning the polarizing directions of the light beam. The light intensities of the forward and backward parts of the moving direction of the recording medium in the far field of the light beam from the analyzer are detected by a photo detector. A difference between the detected signals of the forward and backward parts is generated to reproduce the information recorded on the recording medium. Furthermore, the light beam from the wave plate is splitted into two light beams linearly polarized in mutually orthogonal directions. Two light intensities of the two light beams for the forward and backward parts of the moving direction of the recording medium in the far field of the respective light beams are detected by two photo detectors. Two differences between the outputs from the two photo detectors are determined by two subtractors. A difference or sum between the two subtractors is determined and the information is reproduced on the basis of thus determined difference or sum.

Linear polarized light emerging from the laser source is collimated by the collimating lens and then is focused through the beam splitter and focus lens on the optical memory. Reflected light, which is elliptically polarized upon reflection from optical memory, is subdivided by the beam splitter into three parts: The first part goes through the quarter wave phase retarder followed by a polarizer whose transmission axis is set at 45 degrees, to reach a photo detector through a detector lens. The second part goes through a second polarizer, which has its transmission axis also set at 45 degrees, and then through the second detector lens to reach another photo detector. The third part of light that emerges from beam splitter goes directly to the third detector lens to reach the last photo detector. A simple and elegant equation is derived which relates the three light intensities detected by the photo detectors to the change of phase between the orthogonal electrical components of reflected light from optical memory. Such information is sufficient to detect the recorded information on the optical memory.

자기광학효과에 의하여 정보의 기록·재생을 하는 광자기 픽업에 있어서, 광이용효율이 높고 충분한 SN 비의 광자기 신호가 얻어져서 신뢰성 및 내구성이 높은 소형이고 염가의 광자기 픽업을 제공하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 내부에 레이저 다이오드(17)와 포토 다이오드(18,19,20)가 구성된 광학 모듀울(15)과 일체로 P 편광과 S편광에서 반사율 및 투과율이 다른 편광 프리즘(23)을 설치하고, 광학 모듈울(15)의 내부에 프리즘형 검광자(24)를 설치함으로써 소형화를 꾀하면서 광이용효율의 향상과 광자기 신호의 충분한 SN 비를 확보할 수 있다. 또, 광학 모듀울을 밀봉하는 구조로 함으로써 신뢰성과 내구성이 높은 광자기 픽업을 제공할 수 있다.

Magneto-optical head having heat sink layer

A magneto-optical recording head comprises a magnetic coil formed on a lower surface of a transparent substrate opposed to a magneto-optical disk. A heat sink layer is provided at the outside of the magnetic coil on the lower surface. An objective lens is supported on an upper surface of the transparent substrate. The heat, which is generated by the magnetic coil, is released via the heat sink layer to the space between the magneto-optical disk and the substrate. The release of the heat is facilitated by the air stream which is generated by the rotation of the magneto-optical disk. The heat can be effectively released from the magnetic coil without inhibiting optical characteristics of the objective lens.
