A second layer is formed above the functional layer and exhibits electron injection properties. The hole injection properties of the first layer are then degraded by applying electrical power to an element structure.

A high-resolution, Active Matrix (AM) programmed monolithic Light Emitting Diode (LED) micro-array is fabricated using flip-chip technology. The fabrication process includes fabrications of an LED micro-array and an AM panel, and combining the resulting LED micro-array and AM panel using the flip-chip technology. The LED micro-array is grown and fabricated on a sapphire substrate and the AM panel can be fabricated using PMOS process, NMOS process, or CMOS process. LED pixels in a same row share a common N-bus line that is connected to the ground of AM panel while p-electrodes of the LED pixels are electrically separated such that each p-electrode is independently connected to an output of drive circuits mounted on the AM panel. The LED micro-array is flip-chip bonded to the AM panel so that the AM panel controls the LED pixels individually and the LED pixels exhibit excellent emission uniformity. According to this constitution, incompatibility between the LED process and the PMOS/NMOS/CMOS process can be eliminated.

An object of the present invention is to provide an EL display device, which has a high operating performance and reliability. A third passivation film 45 is disposed under an EL element 203 which comprises a pixel electrode (anode) 46 , an EL layer 47 and a cathode 48 , to make a structure in which heat generated by the EL element 203 is radiated. Further, the third passivation film 45 prevents alkali metals within the EL element 203 from diffusing into the TFTs side, and prevents moisture and oxygen of the TFTs side from penetrating into the EL element 203 . More preferably, heat radiating effect is given to a fourth passivation film 50 to make the EL element 203 to be enclosed by heat radiating layers.

In manufacture of the organic EL display, a defect due to a foreign particle is repaired by detecting the foreign particle that has contaminated the pixel electrode, lowering a fine needle having a hemispherically-shaped tip downward toward the foreign particle, and plastic deforming the foreign particle and part of the pixel electrode together to bury the foreign particle into the pixel electrode. A short circuit due to a foreign particle is prevented by pressing the foreign particle into the pixel electrode.

A surface of a member in contact with a bottom surface of the extension portion 20 has a lyophilic property higher than that of a surface of each of the partition walls 12 . Accordingly, a light emitting device 11 having a structure that makes it possible to fabricate organic EL elements 14 having excellent light-emitting properties by partition walls 12 having a simple structure.

When attaching a substrate with an EL element formed thereon and a transparent sealing substrate, the periphery of a pixel portion is surrounded with a first sealing agent that maintains a gap between the two pieces of substrates, an entire surface of the pixel portion is covered with a second transparent sealing agent so that the two pieces of substrate is fixed with the first sealing agent and the second sealing agent. Consequently, the EL element can be encapsulated by curing the first sealing agent and the second sealing agent without enclosing a drying agent and doing damage to the EL element due to UV irradiation even when a sealing device only having a function of UV irradiation is used.
