[Class 40 (v)] In a radio system for altitude measurement, range-finding, or the detection of remote objects by transmitting pulses of radio frequency and measuring the echo time, the transmitted pulses have similar growth and decay characteristics, the growth and decay periods being a substantial part of the pulse duration, which is determined by the desired degree of accuracy of distance measurement. The pulses may be generated as described in Specification 580,801 by the employment' of a train of sharp-edged pulses of substantial duration compared with the intervals between them for the derivation of short widely-spaced pulses by the periodic shock-excitation of a tuned circuit or the periodic cutting-off of the supply to an oscillator valve associated with such a circuit. Means are provided for controlling the phase of the surge in the tuned circuit, this phase-controlling means being under the control of means adapted. to alter duration of the controlling pulse. Damped waves are thus generated in the tuned circuit having outstanding peaks of substantially symmetrical form constituting widely-spaced short pulses. The receiver for the reflected pulses is arranged to cover only the band width of the transmitted pulse train.
