Improvements in or relating to a method and device for measuring forces by application of the hall effect

A force to be measured is balanced by the force on a current-carrying conductor in a magnetic field, at least part of the current also being passed through a Hall plate in the same magnetic field so that the Hall voltage is indicative of the force to be measured. In Fig. 3, the pressure difference between chambers 2 and 4, which are separated by a diaphragm 3, provides the unknown force. Deflection of the diaphragm unbalances differential transformer 6, and the amplified output is applied in series to coil 7 and Hall plate 13. The central stem 9 of pot core 10 is magnetized by a coil 11 energized either from amplifier 15, or from a separate source. Stem 9 may alternatively be permanently magnetized, with coil 11 providing a control action or being omitted. The Hall voltage is measured by galvanometer 14 calibrated in suitable units. The Hall plate may be shunted to carry only a portion of the amplified current. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), a differential pressure capsule is used, having diaphragms of different surface area at top and bottom, the diaphragms being interconnected by rod 5 which carries coil 7 and the core of transformer 6. A counterweight is also provided for rod 5 and the components mounted on it. Position detector 6 may be a contact or a capacitive detector.
