Window appliances; spring and weight actuated lowering-apparatus.-Fire-escape lowering- apparatus, of the kind in which a rope carrying a sling or cage is wound on a spring drum geared to a centrifugal brake for regulating the speed of descent automatically, is constructed so that the brake acts directly upon the inner periphery of the spring' drum. The apparatus comprises a spring drum mounted in standards in a box provided with a hinged arm B carrying a guide-pulley at the outer end. The drum is fixed on the central shaft F, and is formed with internal teeth at one end which drive a sleeve on the central shaft by means of a compound spur train. Pivoted to projecting portions P of the sleeve. are brake blocks R normally maintained out of engagement, with the inner periphery of the drum by springs r.
