A compressor is used for which the revolution rate and/or control edge on the outlet side can be continuously varied and is controlled so internal compression is varied by shifting the inlet edge relative to the outlet edge. Throughput is regulated by setting the inlet control edge and/or the driving electric motor speed. The system varies a continuously variable control edge (3) on the inlet side depending on the required flow of compressible fluid to the fuel cell. A compressor is used for which the revolution rate and/or control edge on the outlet side can be continuously varied and is controlled so that the internal compression is varied by shifting the inlet edge relative to the outlet edge (2) and the throughput is regulated by setting the inlet control edge and/or revolution rate of the driving electric motor so that the ratio of maximum to minimum compressor speed is less than 0.8 timers that of maximum to minimum compressor throughput.
