Coils.-The wires a, Figs. 1 and 3, in some or all of the winding layers of rotating magnets having coils concentric with the shaft are coiled about bars b or the like of flat cross-section, the spaces left by the wires being occupied by wedges g, h, which compress the winding within the housing c. The bars b may be permanently or detachable mounted in the housing or magnet body, and, for large coils, depressions f may be provided in the walls d of the housing opposite to the contiguous bars b. The wedges g fit into apertures in the housing or magnet body and exert a driving action upon the winding. Both the bars b and the wedges may be hollow for the passage of cooling air. The bars bare secured in position by fitting them in recesses in transverse strips k secured to the sides of the housing. Bars lying in parallel planes may be connected at their inner ends by means of crosspieces. The housing containing the winding is yieldingly mounted in the magnet body m, Fig. 8, by means of bolts o entering perforated wedge-shaped heads p projecting from the inner periphery of the housing. The sides of the winding recess or housing are tapered, as shown in Fig. 3, so that, as the winding heats up, the resulting expansion causes it to be more strongly compressed.
