Class 39(3) An induction furnace comprises a bottom cylinder 1 and a top cylinder 2, and a coil 6 and a magnetic screen comprising a plurality of ferromagnetic elements 7 clamped between the cylinders by a circumferential net of axially extending tie rods 5 interconnecting the cylinders, thereby affording an easily disassembled structure. The tie rods 5 engage slots in tabs 3 and 4 projecting radially from the cylinders 1 and 2 which are of sheet metal. The coil 6 comprises sections interconnected by clamps 10 permitting inlet and outlet of cooling water at the ends of each coil section. The ends of the coil 6 and of the screen elements 7 bear on two recessed annular members 8 and 9 provided with set screws 11 for locking the elements 7 in position. A safety device (not shown) arranged between the coil 6 and clay 12 forming the crucible comprises a double jacket of sheet metal or wire gauze the elements of which are insulated from one another and connected in an electrically operated signalling circuit including means for cutting off the current supply to the coil 6 whenever the elements become electrically connected, e.g. by molten metal oozing through the clay 12.
