[Also in Division B5] Honeycomb structures are produced in unexpanded form by winding sheet material on a rotary former and applying to the material during winding bands of adhesive which are applied by a gluing apparatus movable between two positions so that bands applied in one position are staggered relative to bands applied in the second position, the gluing apparatus being moved between the two positions in synchronism with the rotation of the former. The gluing apparatus is preferably a printing roller, although a pair of printing rollers may be used and brough alternately into their printing positions. The adhesive may be applied to the web as it approaches the former, but in preferred apparatus a single web of material is wound on a hexagonal drum 3 and consolidated on the drum by a roller 7. In this arrangement, the printing roller is carried by a linkage 12, 13 suspended from a carriage 14 mounted for motion parallel with the axis of the drum 3 from the axle of which drum the parallel motion is derived through a cam that causes the carriage 14 to traverse whenever the drum 3 and the printing roller 9 are in the positions shown. One such movement for each revolution of the former is all that is necessary but movements may take place at any odd member of corners of a drum. For some applications the material requires treatment with an impregnating agent, e.g.a thermosetting resin or a flame proofing agent and for this purpose an impregnating trough, a drying chamber and a traversable printing head (Fig. 3, not shown) precede a rotary former.
