The overdrive planetary gearing for motorcars of the parent Specification comprises a driving shaft a and carrier e with planet gears f meshing an internally toothed driven annulus n and a reaction sun gear d on a sleeve c carrying a clutch-brake member i, a free-wheel h connecting the driving shaft and driven annulus. The reaction sun gear d and its associated sleeve c are slidable axially on the driving shaft a by the reaction of the gearing to the transmission of torque through its gear wheels, which are helically toothed. Engagement of the clutchbrake member i with a surrounding casing m or the annulus n by hydraulic pressure &c. is thus assisted. This construction is modified by splining the clutch-brake member i to the reaction sun gear sleeve c, so that the sleeve can slide leftwards in the Figure with respect both to the clutch-brake member i and the driving shaft a. A collar p prevents the reaction sun sleeve c moving rightwards with respect to the clutchbrake member i. The interaction of the helically toothed gears is now effective only to increase the grip of the clutch-brake member i with the annulus n, when the car is driven in reverse or during forward overrunning.
