The armature 1 of a D.C. motor is supplied from three-phase mains R, S, T, through a controlled rectifier bridge 2, the field winding 3 being arranged in a further bridge of controlled rectifiers 4-7 shunted by a free-wheeling diode 8. The field winding is supplied from diode bridge 10 through controlled rectifier 9. The motor is operated in one direction when the rectifiers 4, 5, are conductive. To reverse the motor, the rectifier 9 is turned-off, the field winding discharging through the diode 8 and the rectifiers 4, 5, which are cut-off automatically. To accelerate the rate of discharge, a resistor 11 is connected in series with the diode 8 or a shunt capacitor 12 is provided. In addition, a resistor 13 may be connected in parallel with the field winding and chokes 14, 15, arranged in the bridge 10. When the field winding is fully discharged, the rectifier 9 is again rendered conductive, and the rectifiers 6, 7, are turned-on to reverse the field energization. Simultaneous conduction of the pairs of rectifiers 4, 5, and 6, 7, is prevented.
