Ball mills.-In grinding - plant in which the material to be disintegrated or pulverized is forwarded from one rotary mill to another, the discharge outlet of one mill is arranged in close proximity to the inlet of the next mill so that the material passes from mill to mill in the direction of their common axis, the mills rotating independently of each other and at the same or different speeds in the same or in opposite directions. The first mill a, which may be a ball mill and is fed from a curved pipe 6 from a hopper 4, is mounted in bearings 1, 2 and driven from the shaft 8 by a pinion gearing with the wheel 9. The second mill b is shown as a compound grinding- mill with two compartments 10, 11 charged with balls and tumbling bars, respectively, and is mounted in bearings 12, 13 and driven from the shaft 15 by a pinion gearing with the wheel 16. The hollow trunnion or discharge outlet of the mill a may abut against the inlet trunnion of the mill b, or one trunnion may engage within the other. Or an intermediate piece, which has no effect upon the independence of the direction and speed of rotation of the mills, may be inserted between the two mills. The heads 17, 19 of the mills are preferably provided with spiral elevating- devices to raise the broken materials and discharge them through the outlet trunnions, and a conveying-device may be arranged between the compartments 10, 11. The mills may be driven at different speeds by gearing from a common shaft.
