Each partition 8 is of inverted frusto-conical shape and includes a perforate area 11 surrounding each pipe 9, the perforations enabling upward throughflow of gas. The lower end of each downflow pipe 9 includes an annular plate 12 the area of which corresponds to that of the perforate area 11 of the adjacent transverse partition. In use liquid is introduced into the upper portion of the column via a distributing device 3 and, after following a tortuous path through the column, is removed from the bottom of the column through an outlet 7; gas is introduced into the column via a distributing device 6 and after countercurrently contacting the downflowing liquid leaves through a top outlet 4. The column may incorporate heat exchanging elements if the chemical process requires an additional supply or abstraction of heat.
