Signals on engines &c. indicators and repeaters, signal ; contacts, electric.-A bow-shaped bar b, Fig. 1, is pivoted between or to one side of the rails, and is operated by the wires c, d from the signal cabin, in conjunction with the ordinary signal, if necessary. To give a stopping signal to a driver, the bar is raised into the position shown, so that it engages the contact-lever g, h on the engine, and closes, between the contacts h, m, the circuit i, k of a bell or other alarm. The contacts may be pivoted on a pin y, so that they can be reversed by suitable gearing when the engine is required to run tender foremost. The driver may break the alarm circuit by means of a switch, or by re-setting the lever g, h, and the switch &c. may be arranged so that the driver cannot obtain access to it without stopping the engine. Fig. 4 shows a portable bar, which can be fixed between the rails, by engaging each endshoe n of the bar with the web of the corresponding rail, as shown, to operate the contact mechanism on the engine. The bar is made in two parts l, m, hinged together. In a modification, the end-shoes n of the bar are adapted to be engaged with the flanges of the rails.
