Receipts, checking and recording.-In a machine of the kind described in Specification No. 24,014, A.D. 1905, in which totals and sub-totals are printed, a totalizing - key is provided for predetermining whether a final total or sub-total shall be printed. This key 33, Fig. 5, is constructed to be adjusted into two different positions prior to depression, and, prior to its operation, an ordinary key lock must be manipulated, the barrel of which, when rotated, effects the unlocking of the totalizing- key and locks all the amount and special-transaction keys. A stud on the lock barrel engages with a transverse locking - plate, with which, and another similar locking-plate, the amount, special, and totalizing keys engage, the keys having notches cut diagonally across between two adjacent surfaces of the square key shank. The shank 181 of the key 33 can be rotated until the pin 183 is either vertical or horizontal. When the pin 183 is vertical and the key 33 is depressed, the false key 184 is also depressed to bring into operation the throw-out mechanism for the counter. The detent plate for latching the keys in the depressed position is provided with means to compel the full stroke of a key after initial depression. The transfer devices for the counters include tripping-pawls 201, Fig. 1, normally supporting the transfer pawls 205 free from the ratchets 211 fast upon the registering-wheels. The registering-. wheels can be reset to zero without the transfer pawls being rocked out of engagement. The means for shifting the detail-strip printing-carriage is the same as that described in Specification No. 24,014, A.D. 1905, except in regard to the retaining arm 440. This arm is rocked upward so as to retain the link 424, Fig. 2, in displaced position, until after the printing-carriage has been shifted, when the shaft 170 is rocked upward by means of the throw-out bar 263. When the counter wheels are reset to zero by the rotation of the shaft 167, the segment 460, Fig. 11, and disk 458 are rotated and the pawl 451 drops into engagement with its ratchet-wheel 450. Upon the operation of the machine for printing the total, the arm 452 causes the auxiliary feed pawl 451 to give the ratchetwheel 450 a spacing movement, this spacing being cumulative as regards the ordinary feed by the main pawl 292 and taking place prior to the main feed. The impression roller 472, Fig. 3, is formed with mutilated flanges 473 which permit the inking-roller 475 to ink only those parts of the roller 472 carrying type.
