Electric furnaces.- An arc furnace for making calcium carbide is constructed as shown in section. A metal casing 15 is made as two halfcylinders, which are hinged and latched together at opposite sides, and are provided with hooks by which they are suspended, or lowered on a base 10. A crane with two ropes and a screw - geared winch may be used. Openings in the top of the casing may be closed by pivoted slides 20. One electrode 11 is fixed on the base. The base and casing are lined with broken carbide 37, before an operation. The upper electrode 21 is made with longitudinal holes through which the materials are fed by hand, either as powder, or as sticks moulded under great pressure from powdered lime and coal. The electrode 21 may consist of hollow carbons cemented together, and secured in a metal sleeve 22 which serves for electric connection and is provided with hooks 26 ; these are connected to the crane ropes, leaving some slack between them and the casing 15, so that the upper electrode may be raised by the crane as carbide accumulates in the casing. The openings in the electrode 21 are continued through a long insulator 27, permitting the operator feeding the materials to work on a floor above the furnace, and without contact with the electrode.
