As shown, the crucible D is supported on a rotary carbon pillar E within a body A which may be lined with removable blocks. A pair of horizontal electrodes C, C<1> project into the furnace on each side of the crucible, arcs being struck between adjacent, or as shown between opposite, electrodes. Additional electrodes may be provided : for instance, two more pairs may be arranged above and at right-angles to those of the furnace shown, or more than two arcs may be produced in one plane. The arcs may be arranged in parallel, so that they attract each other and envelop the crucible, or in series, when they repel each other and cause the crucible to be heated by radiation from the furnace lining. Coils or electro-magnets may be used to deflect and regulate the arcs. The bottom of the furnace may slope towards the sides, forming channels for slag and preventing injury to the carbon pillar E, or to the joint line when the furnace is in several parts : the top may be closed by a dome or slab having observation openings G, G<1> for the crucible and arcs respectively. The carbon pillar is mounted in a chuck E<1> and can be raised, after loosening setscrews, by inserting a sharp tool through holes E<2> and prising it up. According to the Provisional Specification, asbestos packing may be inserted between different parts of the furnace, and the crucible need not be rotary.
