The ordinary brake shaft W, Fig. 13, is connected by an arm V and a rod 0 to a slotted frame G' pivoted to brackets J<1> fixed to the wagon frame. The slot in the frame G' is engaged by a sliding block E, Fig. 10, in which works an eccentric or cam D fixed to a transverse shaft A provided with a hand-lever C at each side of the wagon. The brakes are applied by turning the shaft A by means of either of the levers C. The frame G' is connected to the rod O by a lug L, which embraces a reduced part N of the rod O and abuts against a shoulder 8 when the brakes are off. A spring R is placed between the lug L and a nut on the part N, to transmit a yielding pull to the rod O when the brakes are applied. A spring Z acting through a stud X on the block E may be arranged to hold the lever C against a stop b when the brakes are off. The shaft A may be connected to another operating-shaft A', Fig. 14, by cranks or arms and connecting-rods e, f arranged so that, whichever way the power is transmitted, there is always one of the rods in tension. The shafts A, A<1> may be placed between the wheels or outside them.
