Oscillating-vane type.-A cylindrical chamber A having two inwardly-projecting vanes D is combined with an oscillating member B having two outwardly-projecting vanes F so as to form four separate compartments of variable volume. The oscillating member is mounted on a shaft C which communicates its motion to a rotating shaft M by means of cranks and a connecting-rod. An explosive mixture of air 'and gas or oil vapour is admitted and exhausted from the four compartments by suitable valves. A four-stroke cycle is carried out in each compartment, two impulses being given during each revolution of the shaft. A single conical plug valve V rotated by a chain c and chain-wheels at half the rate of the shaft M regulates both the admission to and the exhaust from each compartment through ports in the cover Q. The engine may also be arranged so that both the parts carrying vanes become moving members. The vanes may also be circular discs working in annular chambers.
