The frame-plate 1 with integral uprights 1<b> of different lengths has a sliding clip À3<a> at the bottom to take on the flat head 2<a> of the handle 2, and contains a fluted roller (not shown), which is mounted in cheeks 25, 26 supported by a spring 28. The holder 8 on which the blade is fixed by a screw 9 turns on a sleeve projecting from the longer upright and is engaged by the squared end of a spindle 7 which runs through the sleeve. Pinions 23, 21 on this spindle and on the spindle of the fluted roller gear with a rack 22 occupying a guiding-channel 24 on the longer upright. For shaving, the blade is propped out in the oblique position shown by a guard 12 hinged to a bar 14, which is carried, together with a spring 15 by an arm 17 projecting centrally from the frame-plate and affording adjustment. For stropping, the guard is turned down through a right-angle and the instrument is put on the strop with the blade above and the roller below. The friction of the roller against the strop makes it turn at each reversal of the stroke, and the rack work so actuated reverses the blade.
