Compound &c, engines. - In a single - acting compound engine, two adjacent high - pressure. cylinders exhaust into a third low-pressure cylinder, the piston of which thus. receives two impulses during each power stroke. Six, a multiple of six, or two sets of three cylinders are arranged around the shaft, or the cylinders are placed in one plane and the cranks inclined at sixty degrees. The. cylinders A, A<1>, A<2> are attached to opposite cranks B<1>, B<2>, and have a common cam shaft E actuating the high-pressure cylinder lift valves F, F<1> and an additional cam shaft E<1> for the low -pressure cylinder valves F<2>. The cams are designed to facilitate starting, the steam passing the exhaust valve of the first high-pressure cylinder at full stroke to the low-pressure cylinder when the reversing-lever is full over.
