Реферат: A reference image (7) of a directional symbol system (P) having not less than three directional symbols (P1 to P4) associated with the container (3) is taken with a camera (1). An optical instrument (2) using an optical beam provides a reference measurement (3d) of the container lining. To determine subsequently the container position the camera records the position (8) of the directional system and the optical instrument measures the actual wear (3e) of the container lining and correction factors are obtained by comparing the new position of the directional system with the reference image. Based on the comparison the actual wear measurement and the reference measurement are converted to measurements in the same co-ordinate system.
