FIELD: machine building. SUBSTANCE: pneumatic engine is equipped with adjusting element changing its shape and/or position under influence of centrifugal force and opening or closing orifices to a bigger or smaller degree depending on number of rotations. The orifices are arranged around circumference on plate 11. An adjusting element is formed with elastic ring 15 positioned before orifices in the direction of flow. Due to centrifugal force the elastic ring is deformed so, that it closes the orifices when number of rotations grows. Ring 15 is positioned in a chamber whereto compressed air flows via additional orifices in an additional plate and out of which air escapes through the above said orifices. Additional orifices are positioned along circumference, radius of which is smaller, than radius of the circumference surrounded with the above mentioned orifices. In non-deformed state ring 15 leaves a free passage between the additional orifices and the orifices. A portable grinder incorporates a safety clutch mechanism between the drive motor output and the grinding wheel shaft to prevent the grinding wheel from dislodging due to a malfunction of the motor. In the preferred embodiment, the clutch mechanism comprises a one-way or a free-wheeling clutch and a slip clutch in parallel between the motor rotor and the drive shaft. The one-way clutch transfers power from the motor rotor to the drive shaft and grinding wheel under normal operating conditions. In the event of a motor malfunction which suddenly locks the rotor, the clutch mechanism allows the drive shaft and grinding wheel to slow and stop in a controlled fashion thereby minimizing the possibility of the grinding wheel dislodging from the drive shaft.

Provided is a belt-type grinding tool in which foreign matter is prevented from entering the interior of a tool body. A pulley support bar (12) is held by a bar containment hole (29) in the tool body (10) so as to be capable of sliding between a tension imparting position at which tension is applied to an endless grinding belt (20) and a tension release position at which the pulley support lever (12) is retracted from the tension imparting position and the tension on the endless grinding belt is released. A latching member containment hole (33), which has a circular cross-section and which is substantially orthogonal to the bar containment hole (29), is formed in the tool body (10), and a substantially cylindrical latching member (34) is slidably positioned in the latching member containment hole (33). The latching member (34) is capable of being displaced between a latching position at which the pulley support bar (12) is latched so as to be held in the tension release position, and an unlatching position at which the pulley support bar (12) is unlatched and can be displaced between the tension imparting position and the tension release position. An annular seal member (38) is positioned between the outer peripheral surface (34a) of the latching member (34) and the inner peripheral surface (33c) of the latching member containment hole (33).

To be able to control the admission of compressed air or liquid to a machine in a hand tool, the working medium can be admitted to the machine through a handle with a built-in valve. By turning the handle (1) the valve opens or closes. The valve body itself (7,9) is secured to a stay in the form of a bolt (10) and a pipe (8) screwed into the bottom of the handle casing (1), whereas the valve seat (14) is formed as a recess in a bushing (2) being stationary relative to the casing. The handle has an oblique track (4) wherein a bolt (3) secured in the bushing moves the casing (1) and thereby the valve body relative to the bushing (2) when the handle is turned. When the handle is released in the open position of the valve (FIG. 3), the pressure exerted by the medium will move the casing so as to close the valve since the area of the casing is larger than that of the bush (2). The machine can thereby be safely and reliably disconnected by releasing the hold on the handle. The valve can be used for a hand grinder with a U-shaped handle pipe with handle ends and a hollow spindle situated between the handle ends, an air machine being arranged in the spindle. The spindle has a number of slotted grinding discs, and a pressure medium is admitted to the machine through passages in the handle pipe. A simple and reliable hand grinder which can efficiently grind deep profiles is thereby obtained.

[Also in Groups XXII, XXIII and XXVI] In a dental drill an air turbine drives the output shaft through an epicyclic reduction gear formed by the rotor ball-bearings. Compressed air received through a union 5, and controlled by a ball valve 10, passes through ducts 8 to the turbine rotor 6 and thence to atmosphere through vents 13. The rotor is attached to the inner bearing races 14 and is loosely mounted on a shaft 20, which is rigidly connected to the bearing cages 18, while the outer races 16 are fixed in the casing parts 1, 2. The shaft 20 runs in ball-bearings 21, 22, carries a conical brake member 36 and drives the output shaft 31 through a connecting member 34. When a spring 39 is pressed downwards against the tubular casing 30, it presses a braking cone 23 towards the right, to free the motor shaft, and also bears on a rod 26 to lift the ball 10 off its seating and admit compressed air to the turbine. A double-ended chuck 43 is held in a hollow bore in the spindle 31 and is tightened on to the shank of a tool by screwing a nut 45 inwards. When a tool is to be changed the nut is held, by pressing the sleeve 30 backwards against a spring 38 until radial tongues on the nut engage in slots 42 in the sleeve, and the motor spindle 20 is rotated in the appropriate direction by a knob 46.

The air motor has substantially the size of a standard fountain pen and includes an extruded outer cylindrical casing formed with a circular cross-section eccentric inner surface which has annular grooves in its forward part and a smooth surface, substantially coincident with the bases of the grooves, in its rear part. The grooves constitute air supply and exhaust passages, a retainer groove and a pin groove. A front retainer closes the forward end of the casing and has a tongue projecting into the retainer groove to maintain a predetermined angular orientation in the casing, and a rear retainer is seated against the ribs defining the grooves in the forward portion of the casing and has a tongue projecting into the retainer groove to maintain a relative angular orientation with respect to the front retainer. A motor cylinder is mounted in the casing between the two retainers and has air supply and exhaust ports communicating with the air supply and exhaust passages, respectively. A vane type rotor is rotatably supported in the two retainers, through bearings, and is eccentric to the motor cylinder. The forward end of the rotor is formed with a shaft by means of which a grinder or another tool can be secured to the rotor. The portion of the casing rearwardly of the rear retainer constitutes an air supply and control chamber in which there is an air filter means, and the air passing through the filter means flows through supply passages in the rear retainer into the air supply passage. A connection is provided at the rear of the casing for connecting the air motor to a source of air under pressure, and a manually operable grip threaded on this connection controls the supply of air under pressure to the supply and control chamber. In a modification of the air motor, the exhaust air flows rearwardly along the exterior surface of the motor cylinder and through sound absorbing means to exhaust ports leading to the atmosphere or to an exhaust line.
