An apparatus for estimating an inter-vehicle distance includes a camera, an information processing device, a lane standard database, and an output device. The camera converts images of a preceding car and a lane to image data. The information processing device has a lane detection unit, a distance estimation unit, and a correction unit. The lane detection unit detects lane data by the image data being applied thereto from the camera for a plurality of frames. The distance estimation unit estimates a distance between the preceding car and a traveling vehicle by detecting a y-axis pixel position of the preceding car and comparing the y-axis pixel position to the lane data and pre-stored lane standard data. The correction unit corrects the estimated distance by collecting the distance estimated by the distance information generation unit for the plurality of frames.
