Boom 14 and ram 16 are mounted on a post 6 which is mounted on a longitudinal guide track 8 on a work boat 5. Guide links 30, 32 are provided to keep the carrier at the desired angle to hull 53 and a spring 26, acting between ram 22 and boom 20, urges the wheels 45, 46 against the hull and compensates for relative movement of the ship and work boat. Rods 54, 55 transmit the degree of compression in spring 26 to a remote indicator 56, 57.
