Video signals are recorded on lengthwise tracks on an endless magnetic tape by a head which is moved step-wise across the width of the tape so that a plurality of tracks are formed within the width of the tape. In Fig. 2 the tape 11 is drawn from the inside of a reel 12 and passes between a capstan 16 and a pinch roller 17 to an erase head 31, a guide roller 18 provided with a groove 19 of the same diameter as the capstan, a recording head 32, and back past the capstan and a tensioning arm 23 to the outside of the reel. A conductive portion 74 of the tape is detected by a detector 77 which causes the energization of an electromagnet 78, Fig. 5, which operates a rack 70 to cause an incremental rotation of a cam 65 thereby lowering the heads so that they engage the next track on the tape. The reel 12 may comprise a disc 43 on which is rotatably mounted an inner member 14 provided with a concave surface facing the inmost turn of the tape, Fig. 3 (not shown).
