Assembling matrices. - In machines in which matrices having superposed characters can be assembled and subsequently supported in the first elevator at different levels, and in which the descent of the first elevator can be arrested at different levels, a safety device is provided for stopping the machine in case the matrix line is not , properly presented to the mould. The matrices can be supported at the upper level in the assembler A by means of a movable rail A<2>, which is operated by a handle A<4>, and the first elevator C is provided with a retractable rail for the same purpose. The elevator can be arrested in a higher position than usual by means of a pivoted stop E, which is interposed in the path of a screw C', and carries a pivoted member E<4>, which is adapted to overlie the vice automatic stop-rod G', and to ensure its operation by a screw C<4> on the elevator. If the matrices are assembled in the upper position, and the stop E is also in operation, the matrix line will be at too high a ievel to register with the mould. In this event, the machine is stopped by a safety device comprising a forked interponent F<2>, carried by a lever F, and adapted to be moved under the member E<4>, so as to prevent the operation of the stoprod G<1>. The lever F is operatively connected with the movable rail A<2> of the assembler. Specification 17962/98 is referred to.
