Improvements in spray coating apparatus for spraying liquid coating material under high pressure

A high pressure spray-coating gun comprises a body 11, a valve-operating trigger 12 and a spray nozzle 35 and is provided with an internal chamber 24, Fig. 2 (not shown) to which high pressure coating liquid is supplied through a connection 29 and from which the liquid may escape through an orifice 23 upon the opening of a valve member 47. The valve member 47 seals the orifice 23 under pressure of spring 43 and is connected by a slender steel wire or stem 46 to a head 51 slidably mounted in a bore 15 in the body 11. A sleeve member 49 likewise slidably mounted in the bore 15 and normally spaced by pressure of spring 55 from the head 51 transmits movement of the trigger to the head 51 and thus operates the valve 47. Movement of the sleeve 49 is limited by means of an encircling ring 60, which, cooperating with grooves 62, 63 in the sleeve 49 also provides means to lock the valve in the open or closed positions. The liquid passing through the orifice 23 strikes a jet-spoiling member 211, Fig. 2 (not shown), before passing through two radially offset but converging passages towards the spray nozzle so that danger of a high velocity jet issuing directly from the gun is removed. The flat nature of the valve 47 and valve seat ensure that full flow is attained almost instantly on opening, thus eliminating danger of splash marks during opening or closing.
