Wooden rollers.-Rollers either of solid wood alone or of wood with a covering of sheet vulcanite or other hard substance impervious to moisture have spindles provided with vanes or wings, wedgeshaped longitudinally and radially, and engaging the material of the roller. The inner ends of the spindles may be cylindrical with pointed ends, or conical, or of rectangular or other section, and the webs, vanes, or wings c are formed near the outer ends ; the vanes are wedgeshaped longitudinally and radially, and tapered towards the axis at the outer edges. To prevent splitting, a ring d may be driven on each end of the roller or a wedge-shaped ring may be driven into each end. In the latter case, the vanes may be formed on bosses supported either by short centre shafts or by a shaft passing right through the roller, the bosses being either keyed on the shaft or secured by flats on one or both sides, or by squaring part of the shaft.
