Valves and valve gear; air pumps.-A single piston valve e actuated by fluid-pressure distributes the steam to the two cylinders of the compound engine, Fig. 3, or the single engine, Fig. 9. The engines are described as driving directly an air pump, the piston-rods being connected by a beam C. The valve e is worked by the steam cylinder 12 controlled by the oscillating valve 7, which is worked by a tappet 16 on the beam C. The valve e may, however, be worked by a hand-lever 21 at starting, or if it should stick, or by means of a lever 26 and rod 28, Fig. 9, worked by a tappet 30 on the crosshead. In Fig. 3 the steam is admitted to a central chamber i and passes to the high-pressure cylinder through parts 1, to the low-pressure cylinder through ports 1, 2, and to the exhaust chamber k through ports 2, 3. In Fig. 9, the exhaust chamber k is in the centre and the steam space at the ends of the valve which admits steam simultaneously to the top of one cylinder and the bottom of the other. Cushioning reciprocating ports. - The pistons overrun the main ports f, f<1> at the end of the up-strokes, the residual exhaust having to escape through a restricted passage which may be adjustable.
