[Cognate Application No. 19,176, A.D. 1908, dated Sept. 12.] Overwinding, preventing; speed, governing. - Winding- engines are provided with a screw-threaded shaft and with a travelling nut adapted to engage at the end of its travel with a clutch-forming sleeve or arm, which is moved forwards by a governor so as to make early contact with the nut if the speed is excessive towards the end of the wind, a shaft being rocked thereby so as to operate the brakes, throttle, and reversing-gear. The screwed shaft A driven from the engine carries a nut B formed with a forked lug b sliding on a rod C. The nut is formed with catches b<1> adapted to engage at the end of the wind with similar catches f on sleeves F which are mounted on squared portions of the shaft and are moved forwards, when the speed is high, by links l connected to a two-armed lever L coupled to a governor. When the nut engages the sleeve, it is rotated and swings a rock-shaft D carrying two arms G. One or other of these arms strikes a catch lever which is raised out of engagement with the boss of a weighted lever controlling the throttlevalve, the brakes, and the reversing-gear. The rock-shaft D and guide-rod C are normally retained in mid-position by spring pin E<1>. To provide for winding from varying levels, the nut B may be formed in two parts coupled by a pin B<1>, Fig. 5, which may pass through any one of a series of holes in each part of the nut. The nut is provided with a ring of teeth engaging a toothed guide-bar B' carried by arms on the rock-shaft D. In a modification shown in Fig. 7, a governor is arranged at each end of the shaft A having weighted arms n thrown out by centrifugal force against the action of springs n<1>, the arms n being connected to sliding catches 0, which are thrust forwards into early engagement with the travelling nut if the speed is excessive. The arms n are formed as bell-cranks having a pin-and-slot connexion with each other and provided with bent portions engaging recesses in the sliding catches 0. Springs P are arranged between the bell-cranks and the rotating governor casing N.
