Lasting.-A pulling-over machine is constructed so that the upper can be gripped all round by the pincers, and after it is stretched, part of the machine can be raised clear of the tools, then moved to one side about a vertical axis, and finally rotated about an horizontal axis to bring the insole uppermost and in a convenient position for lasting. The shoe is supported on an adjustable rest 18, Fig. 1, in a frame 2, which can be rotated about a shaft 3 mounted in a bearing 5 at the upper end of a pillar 6. This pillar is rotatable, and can be raised vertically to move the frame 2 clear of the various tools when it is desired to rotate it. A hold-down 13 is provided to engage the last and force it against the rest 18. The pulling-over of the upper is effected by four sets of adjustable toggle-pincers 41, 42, 43 (one not shown), which are actuated by hand-levers or by the depression of treadles. The pincers at the sides and back are guided to move in curved paths so that the upper is drawn well over the last and laid under it. The front pincer jaws are bent so that they embrace the toe of the last, and are guided to move firstly outwards and then under the last. After it has been pulled over, adjustable holding-devices 32, 36, Fig. 5, are forced against the upper to clamp it against movement, and then the pincers are released, springs being provided to return them automatically to their normal positions. The frame 2 is then raised and rotated ready for the lasting operation. The adjustments provided for the pincers, the holding devices, and the rest, enable the machine to be used for various sizes of boots, and for right and left lasts.
