Weigh-bridges for railway vehicles.-Assuming the bridge to be in equilibrium with a truck blocked upon it by an arm D<2> on a tumbler shaft D', Fig. 2, by the continuous rotation of a shaft A, a cam B, Fig. 6, allows linked levers B<3> B<5> to grip the steelyard G<3>, a cam C, Fig. 7, allows a sector C<5> to fall against the steelyard, and the same cam reversing the sector, drives the ratchet-wheel C" of a register ; finally, while the cam B releases the steelyard, a cam D acting through a lever D<8> half turns the tumbler shaft to release the truck. The tumbler shaft having a second arm D<3>, the next truck is prevented from coming on the bridge till the levers are put back to the positions shown in Fig. 2, by means of a hand-lever D<13>, and until this is done, the cam shaft is locked because the machine lever D<8> carries a spring bolt D<9> which engages a radial groove in a disc D<10>. When the hand-lever is again in the position shown, the spring bolt snaps into a cam-channel in the disc, which during the next operation puts it again on the surface of the disc. The tumbler shaft may be replaced by a lever working two sliding stops. The hand-lever and blocking-cam may be replaced by an eccentric, with which arrangement the cam shaft may be driven by power. Indicating and registering mechanism.-The index sector C<5>, Fig. 7, is shaped so as to feel the steelyard by angular movements proportional to the load determining its position of equilibrium, and is allowed to have a light touch, but is started promptly by a heavy lever C<8> falling against a stop C<10>. The link C<4> is provided with an adjustment C<6>. The registering ratchet-wheel C" is kept from over-running by an adjustable brake C<15>. Hydrostatic apparatus.-The load is balanced by a mercurial float, Fig. 10, with dash-pot action, and with a hollow weighted ball for final adjustment. Beams.-The steelyard has an out-spreading fulcrum, and bears a screw adjustment for the attachment of the float-rod.
