A method of forming metal articles by means of shock waves generated in water comprises a capacitor the charge on which is discharged across an electrode gap situated in the water thereby producing the shock waves. A metal blank to be formed is placed in a die having two parts 18, 22 the part 18 being advanced towards or retracted from, the part 22 by means of an hydraulic system which includes a piston 34 travelling in a cylinder 33, the hydraulic pressure being produced by a pump 35 and admitted to either end of the cylinder as required by a solenoid-operated valve 37 by way of hydraulic lines 38, 39. When the die parts are closed to clamp the metal blank and sufficient pressure is developed against the piston 34 a pressureactuated switch 47 closes to actuated valves 60, 67; the valve 60 admitting water to the chamber 23 whilst the valve 67 allows the chamber 19 to be evacuated of air. The bank of capacitors is then charged from an electrical source and then discharged across an electrode gap 54 situated in the water chamber 23 thereby to produce shock waves in the water in the chamber 23 to form the metal blank into the desired shape. The system comprises an interlocking electrical relay system to ensure that the sequence of operations in the forming of the blank occur in the required order and that should any malfunction occur at any stage the system fails safe. Means are also provided to stop the operational sequence at any point therein should this be desired. In another embodiment part of the relay system is replaced by a series of camoperated switches.
