Electricity, supplying.-After prepayment, the spindle 26 is rotated and a lever 35 with a pawl 41 sets forward the ' quantity' wheel 23, which bears a pawl 38 engaging a ratchet 37 on the meterdriven shaft 36. The cam 39 is thereby removed from the lever 47, allowing the spring 44 to raise the switch-locking lever 45 into the operative position. The rotation of the spindle 26 also carries round the cam 29, which is free to work between stops on the spindle, stretching the spring 72, which is connected to the boss 71 of the cam and to the framework at 73, until it passes the dead-centre. The cam then flies round under the action of the spring and lifts the bell-crank 54, which is pivoted to the switch lever 46, so as to bring the arm 55 of the bell-crank against the lug 56 on the locking- lever 45, when the further action of the cam on the bell-crank causes the arm 46 to turn about the pivot 20 and close the circuit through the contacts 21, at the same time snapping beyond the locking- lever 45. The working of the meter rotates the ratchet 37 which, through the pawl 38, returns the quantity wheel until the cam 39 operates the lever 47 so as to lower the locking-lever 45, freeing the switch arm 46 and permitting the spring 40 to open the circuit. The pawl 38 is pivoted with a spring- actuated lever 38<b>, which is mounted on the reverse side of the ' quantity' wheel and is engaged by the cam 39, so that the pawl is held firmly in engagement with the ratchet while the cam is freeing the locking-lever. Coin action ; coin-discharging mechanism.-The coin 32 taken half round by a carrier on the shaft 26 drops therefrom and is forced between the fixed piece 32 and the pivoted arm 33 by means of a cam on the carrier, the projection 62 on the arm raising the lever 35 by engaging the pin 65 which works in the slot 66 ; the pawl 41 on the lever simultaneously rotates the quantity wheel 23. The apparatus may be adapted to take coins of various sizes by adjusting the inclination of the stop 32.
