[Also in Group XVI] In a line selecting device for machines adapted to print on punched record cards &c. information derived from data thereon, the engagement of an electromagnetic clutch 45, to feed the cards the requisite amount, is controlled by a photo-cell 122. The record card, Fig. 8, is printed in a line position, determined by marks 109; these are sensed by the cell 122, Fig. 6, and connected to an amplifier unit 123 to operate a relay counter 124. The photo-cell is arranged to scan the cards one machine cycle prior to the sensing of printing data perforations and the number registered in the counter 124 is transferred to a storage unit 125. In the following machine cycle the quantity in the unit 125, representing the number of lines already printed, is applied in the form of pulses to a commutator 48, 49, 50 and a rotating brush 51 (not shown) picks up the pulse so that a magnet 87 operates to disconnect the electromagnet 45. At the same time an appropriate line-spacing latch magnet operates to latch the clutch in position. The clutch is returned by mechanical means for the next cycle of operation.
