Method of and apparatus for sealing and annealing glass envelopes
Реферат: 645,206. Discharge apparatus. COMPAGNIE DES LAMPES. Jan. 30, 1948, No. 2829. Convention date, Jan. 31, 1947. [Class 39 (i)] Relates to the sealing and annealing of glass envelopes, e.g. hard glass envelopes of electronic tubes. As shown, the main body 28 of the envelope, to which a glass seal 26 is to be joined, is placed in a carrier 5 which is mounted for vertical movement along guide rods 25 and is rotatable by gear wheels 8, the seal 26 being preheated and placed on a carrier 6, on a shaft 11, which is movable vertically independently of, but is rotatable in unison with, the carrier 5 by gearing 7 on the connecting shaft 9. The seal 26 is raised to meet the body 28 and the two parts are set in rotation, the heat of the junction being provided by proximity to an oven 12 and by a tangentially arranged series of burners 14. During the sealing, inert gas is passed into the body 28 through a tube 18 which passes through a centre tube 15 of a mercury seal and through the exhausting tube 31 of the body 28. A gas-tight joint 17 is provided between the tubes 15, 31. After sealing, the burners 14 are extinguished and swung aside, the rotation is stopped and the oven 12, which is mounted on a vertically adjustable plate 10, is raised to bring the seal within the oven. The inert gas escapes by way of the exhausting tube 31, tubes 15, 20 and cock 23. The exhausting pump 22 is now started to reduce the pressure in the body 28 which still receives inert gas, the degree of vacuum depending upon the adjustment of the cock 23. The support 32, for a telescopic joint 19 of the mercury seal and the tube 18, is then raised to bring the lower end of the tube above the point 27 where the exhausting tube 31 is sealed off by a blowpipe, the body 28 being released from the carrier 5. The carrier 6 is simultaneously lowered so that the body 28, no longer supported by that carrier, descends and draws out the tube 31 at its sealing-off point. The oven 12 descends with the carrier 6, their actuating mechanisms being interconnected, and the body 28 is allowed to remain in the oven, for annealing, for several hours. The envelope is kept full of gas, to preserve the elements from oxidation, until the final evacuation, when the tube 31 is opened for connection to a vacuum pump.
