In a method of continuous casting in which the withdrawal rate of the casting is varied cyclically so that the position of the solidification front in the mould reciprocates along the length of the mould, the form of the reciprocation movements is periodically modified at regular or irregular intervals in such a way as to cause an advance of the solidification front towards the discharge end of the mould to a position beyond the farthest position reached by the front in its reciprocating movement during the period preceding the modification, in order to melt or wash away impurity accretions between the ingot and the internal mould surface. In one embodiment, the continuous casting mould has a plurality of coolant channels 30A to 30H spaced along the length of the mould, each channel being provided with an inlet thermocouple 37, outlet thermocouple 38 and a valve 35. The difference in temperature of the coolant leaving and entering the mould is determined by devices 39 and derived signals fed to a controller 41 to control the coolant flow in each channel. In this manner, the solidification front can be caused to reciprocate between the channels. In Fig. 4, an ingot 50 is withdrawn from a mould 10 by rollers 51. The temperature of the ingot at the outlet mould end is sensed at 52 and a signal derived from the ingot surface temperature fed to a roller speed controller 54. An increase in withdrawal speed will result in advancement of the solidification front.
